If a poem were written about Mary Lee Di Spirito and her volunteer work with ACCA, the creative license would have to be taken to rhyme her last name with maestro, and then run with that imagery. It fits. She conducts a symphony of workers in and around Annandale who play a part in the furniture program at ACCA. Once a Fairfax County social worker overtures Mary Lee about furnishing a home for a needy family, she assembles the team that collects, delivers, and installs the furniture. She knows each one by heart. They are in harmony because Mary Lee makes good relationships a top priority.
On November 20, 2024, Mary Lee received a statewide award and applause from the crowd when she was named the Outstanding Senior Volunteer at the Executive Mansion in Richmond. This honor was presented by the Governor’s Volunteerism & Community Service Award Committee. It wasn’t for longevity—although a high note of Mary Lee’s volunteer resume is working with the furniture mission for 35 years—but it was in recognition of her expansive involvement with ACCA and other non-profits, plus her example leading others into the world of volunteerism.
In addition to being the driving force of the furniture mission, Mary Lee is a member of various ACCA committees, and not in name only. She works! She is on ACCA’s Finance Committee and its Development Committee and pours herself into the food pantry and emergency assistance program as needed. She has similar roles in concert with several Fairfax County boards that provide shelter, furniture, and food. Mary Lee is a leader and an instrument for positive change.
We are proud to have Mary Lee working with ACCA and thank her for her committed service to the community.
